Stories from the River Thames - A talk by Mudlark Nicola White for London Rivers Week 2024
If you can't make it to my talk on the Isle of Dogs in London on Saturday 22nd June, for London Rivers Week 2024, then don't worry - here it is, uploaded to UA-cam. I hope you enjoy it. It's London Rivers Week 2024 from 22nd to 30th June. London Rivers Week is a week-long annual campaign inspiring the public to celebrate all of London’s rivers and the many projects taking place to protect them. This year’s theme is ‘London is a river city’, with a focus on health and well-being and cultural activities.
Thank you to Thames21 for inviting me to give a talk!

Mudlarking on the River Thames Reveals Intriguing Treasures Full of History and Mystery (April 2024)

In 1750 a dockyard worker dropped one of his belongings in the Thames mud. He was about to pick it up when someone called him over. By the time he went back to pick it up, the tide was coming in and it was lost in the Thames mud - where it stayed for almost 300 years. And then I found it! My favourite finds are those with names on and during this outing I was not disappointed. Come with me to s...

Whales are dieing from choking on trash in the middle of nowhere. We have to stop trash and pollution literally in a year for ever from now on because the heat is projected to be twice as hot next year . So we are going underground soon.

My Grandmother who lived in the deep woods of Louisianna used to sew satin and slicky nylon robes, nighties, underthings and then quilts and pillows from the scraps. I loved anything that sparkled and glittered when i was little and she would let me raid her button tins. She had the most beautiful rhinestone buttons and the metal casings looked very much like the ones you found. Brought back sweet memories❤

Ahh I didn't know you were from Cornwall Nicola! I often take a few minutes to purposely day dream back to the holidays as a child at my aunties cottage at Torpoint, Cornwall. The cottages front garden ended and the sea began! It was absolutely magical! It was directly opposite the Plymough Navy Frigate Dock, so you may know where I mean, maybe not though. But yeah, Cornwall is 😍 👌🏼

French citizens are angry because 1 billion euros was spent to clean the Seine river to satisfy the Olympic committee request that the river water has to be clean to swim in. President Emmanuel Macron and Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo were going to swim in the river as an act of insurance. The plans were canceled because the angered were going to put e coli into the water in what I will only describe as a natural and organic communal experience .

It was Father's Day here in the US last Sunday, and I was in northern Minnesota at my niece and nephew's cottage (we call them 'cabins' here) in the woods, with my grown son and nephew. So for the first time since I started watching your videos years ago, I missed one on the day it was released. Then, I had three gigs at libraries here in Wisconsin with my portable planetarium, at three different locations all around the state. AND I've been sick with a pretty intense sinus infection, which led to even more intense medicine to kill it. All of which goes to explain why this is by far the longest it's taken me to watch you. You asked what makes the time fly for us. For me, it's either looking up at the night sky -- with just my eyes, binoculars, or one of my telescopes; or, when making something, often a telescope or some accessory for one, but lots of other things, too, from furniture to clocks to bird feeders and other things that strike me.

Hi Nicola, it's been great hearing about these people again, you are so lucky to be living near a place with so much history and so many interesting people. I hardly like to mention this, but the word (ye) has 2 meanings, an old English meaning 'you' and pronounced 'ye'. In the other usage the letter y is based on a rune called 'thorn' and if you look at the letter you will see the likeness to a thorn. In this case the letter is pronounced 'th' so 'ye' is pronounced 'the'. Look forward to the next episode of your wonderful journeys. xx
